Magnesium is an energetic metal that has the potential to play a unique roll in assisting the greening of the worlds energy demand.
The oxidation of Magnesium metal has the ability to release harvestable energy. A Magnesium oxidation displacement reaction may contribute to the reduction of CO2 by splitting Carbon Dioxide into solid carbon.

MgO Conversion to Magnesium Metal
A traditional method of producing Magnesium Metal utilizes the Dow Process to refine Mg from seawater. Several approaches may be used to achieve the conversion of Magnesium Oxide into pure Mg Metal, all of these paths are energy intense.
One MgO reduction method is a two step process that utilizes a Molten Media Catalyst to perform Molten Salt Electrolysis and vapor compression distillation.

The use of Tin (Sn) as a catalyst in the electrolysis step forms a 50-50 Sn/Mg alloy that is the direct feedstock into the second step vacuum distillation unit. The multi effect distillation unit yields pure magnesium (Mg) metal and a residual of approximately 90% Sn and 10% Mg and is returned directly to the electrolysis unit and used as the molten cathode material.

Magnesium Battery
The large scale adoption of the use of Magnesium in battery technologies seems to lag in relation to other more prominent materials. As additional research develops more common usage we may see Magnesium Batteries in many forms, items such as the Magnesium-Air Battery may find a its own use case niche.
Opportunities to explore the value of Magnesium in flow batteries and fuel cells are an area worth pursuing.
