One MgO reduction method is a two step process that utilizes a
Molten Media Catalyst
to perform Molten Salt Electrolysis and vapor compression distillation.
The use of Tin (Sn) as a catalyst in the electrolysis step forms a 50-50 Sn/Mg alloy that is the direct feedstock into the
second step vacuum distillation unit.
The multi effect distillation unit yields pure magnesium (Mg) metal and a residual of approximately 90% Sn and 10% Mg and is returned
directly to the electrolysis unit and used as the molten cathode material.
