Used Beverage Cans (UBC)
Aluminum Can Scrap or Used Beverage Cans (UBC) are compressed into uniform
Briquetted UBC
or
Baled UBC
and traded worldwide.
An alternative method of collection and transporting scrap shorter distances involves shredding and blowing the
Shredded UBC
into transport trailers.
Aluminum Can Depot buying systems are used to collect
Used Beverage Cans (loose UBC)
from the public.
The can collection system magnetically separates and weighs the incoming loose whole or flattened aluminum beverage cans,
that are free from excessive dirt, liquid or other foreign materials.
A higher grade of aluminum can scrap is
New Beverage Can Stock Scrap.

Aluminum Shredder Fragments
The recovery and marketing of
Aluminum Shredder Fragments
commonly called Zorba,
is typically derived from sorted auto shredder fragments
that have been magnetically separated to remove the majority of iron and steel and
a secondary separation has been performed (such as eddy current or specific gravity classification)
to consolidate the non-ferrous metals content. The resulting content is a product with a
minimum of 50% aluminum and a minimum of 80% total non-ferrous metals.
Irony Aluminum Recovery
Many complex metal components are manufactured or assembled with more than one type of metal.
In many cases it is difficult, uneconomical or impossible to manually disassemble these components.
One group of these complex multi metal type materials is grouped together and called
Irony Aluminum Scrap.
This group consists of items that are a majority aluminum with a minority content of steel.
Many automotive components such as
transmissions
and engine parts are segregated as Irony Aluminum scrap.
Irony Aluminum is typically sold on a recovery basis to a
Sweat Furnace operation
and valued on the percentage of aluminum recoverable.
Sweat Furnace
A Sweat Furnace is a process used to separate metals that have different melting points.
You heat the furnace hot enough to melt one of the metals but not hot enough to melt the other.
In the example of recovering
Irony Aluminum
scrap,
the furnace operates at a temperature adequate to turn the aluminum into a molten state which then flows away from
the steel components which remain solid.
The molten aluminum is poured into molds to cool into uniform blocks of
remelt aluminum
ingot or sows.
The residual steel is raked from the furnace and sold as
furnace tin
Remelt Aluminum
Recovered, remelted metallic aluminum scrap that is free of slag, dross oxides and other foreign metal types is referred to as
Remelt Aluminum Ingot.
The most common reason to remelt aluminum is to liberate it from other metal attachments such as steel.
A typical ingot with a minimum weight of 25 lbs. and a maximum weight of 75 lbs. each is referred to as a pig.
Large remelted uniform slabs called
sows
have a minimum weight of 500 lbs. and a maximum weight of 2,200 lbs.
Aluminum Dross Recovery
Slags and skimmings that are collected from aluminum melting operations are referred to as a dross material.
Aluminum Dross
Recovery is a process that attempts to reclaim the residual metallic aluminum from the oxides and other contaminates.
The dross recovery process involves melting the dross material under a molten salt bath.
The solid metallic aluminum particles melt and flow together and are collected as
remelt aluminum
ingot or sows.
A byproduct of the aluminum recovery process from dross is
Aluminum Salt Cakes.
These salt cakes may be processed for
Salt Recovery
and the separation of
oxides.
