Collecting Paper for Recycling
If you wish to start a paper recycling program or have paper that you wish to recycle, we may be able to assist you to Find a Local Recycler that can collect your waste paper.

Sorting and Grading
Paper Stock Merchants collect, sort and pack waste paper into a highly recyclable commodity, by sorting to remove contamination and using grading skill to segregate into the highest value specification.
Check-out scrapindex.net to see grades and specifications of waste paper.

Paper Stock Packing
Paper Stock Merchants collect, sort and pack waste paper into truck lot loads of single grades for efficient transportation to paper mills. The packing process entails compressing the paper into densified bundles with the use of a baling machine and securely tied, usually with baling wire.

Paper Fiber Recovery
The Paper recycling process is based on the recovery of fibers and is achieved by re-pulping waste paper. The fibers are liberated by saturating the waste paper typically with water and gently agitating the mixture until it becomes a uniform slurry or pulp.
The strength of most papers is determined by the integrity and length of the fibres and while there is no actual limit to the number of times fiber can be recycled, over time the fibers tend to become damaged or shortened which may restrict the types of products they are regenerated into. It is common to blend virgin pulp and recycled fiber to maintain a level of quality and strength in paper products.
The quality of recovered fiber varies depending on the sources and sorting of feedstock and the level of contamination. Some Feedstocks may be direct pulp substitutes, some require bleaching or de-inking, others types may be suitable as filler grades.

Contaminates in Waste Paper
Items that diminish or effect the value of waste paper include labels, tape, staples, glues, book bindings or any non-paper articles. For each pound of contamination in waste paper there is an equivalent pound of drag-out fiber which reduces the total recovery yield. Contamination & drag-out from the pulpers are a wet waste and the moisture content multiplies the weight of the waste stream. In addition to the reduction in recovery yield there is an associated disposal cost to the waste stream.
Waste paper generated from curbside collection or MRFs tend to have plastic, glass and metal contamination. Paper collected by disposal companies also tend to have a higher degree of general garbage contamination verses paper packed by dedicated Paper Graders, Packers and Recyclers.

Recycling Old Magazines
Recycling of old magazines has its own unique set of challenges. Shiny papers such as magazine stock are clay coated or clay filled. Since clay is much heavier than the paper, the recover fiber yield on each ton of magazine stock is much lower than uncoated papers. The Mills that re-pulp magazine stock must be equipped with defoamers and clay extraction systems.
Books and magazines may have heavy bindings and some contain insoluble hot melt glues which are excessive contamination in the re-pulping process.
Magazines, flyers and map stock tend to be heavily printed and commonly are made from short or shaved fibers so the end uses of recovered magazine stock fibers may be somewhat restrictive.

OCC Economic Indicator
For many years industry observers have used the market for Old Corrugated Cardboard as a leading economic indicator.
When general product manufacturers schedule their production purchasing chain, one of the key components has been the cardboard box that their products are packaged in.
The packaging / boxes are required to be in inventory in advance of any product production and for this to occur a lead time is required to place and receive box orders.
Box makers require a raw supply of container board from paper mills and container board is manufactured from Old Corrugated Cardboard, so by tracking the supply / demand factors of OCC volumes and prices leading economic trends can be observed.

High Grade & Fine Papers
Fine printing and writing papers are grouped into a class called High Grade and may not contain groundwood fibers. The High Grade papers are segregated by value starting from Colored Ledger which includes colored fine papers (either beater dyed or heavily printed white papers) which require bleaching or used in a cosmetically degraded application.
The more valuable grade is lightly printed White Ledger which may be blended with pulp and the higher grade, higher valued unprinted Hard White and is a direct pulp substitute.

Kraft Paper
Kraft papers contain quality fiber which gives kraft paper products superior strength. Brown Kraft is used to manufacture a variety of products. In the corrugating process kraft paper is converted into Corrugated sheet to make Corrugated Cardboard boxes, new rejects and trimmings from that process are referred to as Double Lined Kraft DLK. This material is clean and has no printing, staples or tapes.
Kraft paper is also used to manufacture a wide variety of bags. The end of life Kraft Bag Waste is recovered for its desirable fiber content. Industrial Kraft MultiWall PolyBag Waste is a little less desirable but is still recovered.

Bleached Kraft is a direct pulp substitute and Lightly Printed Bleached Kraft LPBK may be blended with pulps. Printed Bleached Kraft PBK and Colored Kraft have excellent quality fiber and are recovered and used in cosmetically degraded applications.
